Free Carbon in Tungsten Carbide Powder and Its Effect on Cemented Carbide
In short, free carbon is relative to compound, and carbon that is not easy to combine or separate from compound is carbon of simple substance. The existence of element in the form of simple substance is called free carbon, and free carbon is carbon element in the form of simple substance.
The ideal carbon content of tungsten carbide powder in cemented carbide is 6.13%. When the carbon content is too high, the product will have obvious carburized structure. The product will eventually have obvious excess free carbon.
Free carbon will greatly reduce the strength and wear resistance of cemented carbide.
In metallographic examination, the C-type hole represents the carburized (C-type): free carbon.
